Tunnels often present a radio coverage problem for railroads. Even intermediate and small tunnels also require adequate coverage; the Tunnel Radio “OFA” is designed to wirelessly connect an existing base site to the tunnel.
The frequency band may be 160 MHz, 450 MHz or higher depending upon the service required and whether operating in either simplex or half-duplex mode.
If the system requires train data, such as EOT/HOT or Distributed Power where a propagation fill is needed from outside the tunnel (front to back of train), then a dual antenna system is employed. For larger tunnels, the system may also be used in conjunction with the Tunnel Radio Tunnel Voice VHF or UHF systems.
